“Halsey looks to return to the big time”
29 Jul 2010
Referee Mark Halsey is looking to work his way back up to the Premier
League after missing all of last season. In August 2009 Halsey was
diagnosed with lymphoma of the glands. The 49 year old had to have an
operation to remove a cancerous tumour from his throat. You can’t help
but be impressed with the bravery shown by Halsey. Especially when you
take into account the fact his wife was diagnosed with leukaemia before
Halsey was diagnosed with his illness.
After being given the all clear, Halsey made his referring return in
a reserve match between Leicester and Scunthorpe in March. His league
return came the following month at the Don Valley Stadium when he took
charge of Rotherham against Port Vale. It was a good game to return in
as Halsey didn’t have to show a single card all game.
Beating cancer wasn’t the only battle Halsey had to go through to
return to league refereeing. The fitness and stamina tests that
officials have to pass are no walk in the park. To take control of a 90
minute match involving full time athletes requires the referee to be
able to keep up with all the action. After recovering from a
life-threatening illness it’s even harder to return to the required
levels. Halsey passed all the tests however. He will be looking to climb
up through the leagues again, in the hope of returning to the Premier
League.
Meanwhile, why not place a football bet on who you think are the favourites to win the championship ? Middlesbrough are currently up there, but with the season just over a week away, who do you fancy?
