Way of the mark with this one. 2 vs 0 to Portugal, 3 yellows and no reds. So far rating of 3 out of 5. Guessed the winner though, so that is 2 out of 2

When he was assigned to this match, Herbert Handel must have had flashbacks of the last game he centered in which Turkey was playing when he was assaulted by a Turkish fan. If that affected the way he officiated this match, he did not show it. Turkey and Portugal are two "strong headed" teams. Rough play was to be expected and a strong Referee was needed. However, in order not to make this a "Yellow and Red cards festival", we needed a Referee who could also show restraint and only sanction was needed to be sanctionned. After all, this is not a U-12 tournament. I think Fandel did a decent job overall. The only regret I have about his performance is that I think he should have been more strict with players comitting fouls on Christiano Ronaldo. It seems to me that Turkish players were taking turns fouling Christiano Ronaldo so as to avoid yellow cards. Christiano Ronaldo's reputation for simulation may have influenced Fandel's judgement into allowing play to continue at times when there was real contact against him. That was a tough match to center...

I just realized that I made a big mistake in my last post. The game in which Fandel was assaulted did not involve Turkey at all and it was not a Turkish fan who assaulted him but a Danish fan. Don't I feel like a total idiot now... Please disregard everything I wrote before "Turkey and Portugal are two "strong headed" teams...". Sorry about messing up.
