Overall excellent performance by the Spanish Referee in the opening game of "the death group". The first half was easy as the players were saving their energy for the second half. Gonzales gave three excellent yellow cards, all to Rumanian players, one for a handball "a` la Maradona", another to a player for delaying the restart of play and unsporting behavior after he kicked the ball away from a French player after Gonzales had indicated a throw-in for France. I liked that one because I think that Referees should give it more often. The second half was, as expected, a lot busier as the play got rougher (but not brutal). I thought Gonzales did a fine job of maintaining control of the game. He handed a few yellow cards to players on both teams and they all seem justified to me. As a matter of fact, neither players nor coaches really complained about any of the cards. 8 out of 10 points to Manuel Gonzales for his fine performance. His two Assistant Referees also put on a great performance with hard to make off-side calls.

Excellent performance, but missed a definate red-card offence by Makelele in the first half.

Mark: Yes, that was definatly a red card... i think he would be giving it, if he has seemt it better.

I knew I missed something in my comments...The Makelele foul. When I first saw it from the regular TV camera angle, I thought "that's a yellow". Looking at the Referee's position at the time, I don't think that he had the right angle to really appreciate the intensity of the contact. When I saw the replay, I realized that it had been a potential bone-crushing contact. I agree with you Mark and Perox. It should have been a red card. I believe that the Referee would have made a different call if he had been in a better position. Makelele was very lucky. I am glad that the Rumanian player did not get hurt.
