He was a terrible ref! He didn't call Netherlands offside goal, didn't call a foul inside Netherlands box, and he missed several other fouls on the Italians close to the Netherlands goal. He shouldn't ref anymore of the Euro games this year.

That was tough game to center between two hard playing and physical teams. I thought that the Referee did a decent job. Not calling an off-side on Van Nistelroy's goal was courageous but it was the right thing to do. This is an extremely rare occasion and most people forget that a player outside of the field of play without permission from the Referee is still considered an active player as if he was on the field. This is to prevent unsporting behavior (which warrants a yellow card) by players who step outside the field of play for the sole purpose of putting an opponent in an off-side position. In this case, the Italian player (Panucci, I think) went outside the field of play, behind the goal line, without clearance from the Referee and, therefore, he was still considered an active player and Van Nistelroy was not off-side. It was the Italian player's responsibility to know that he could not leave the field without permission. The Referee applied the rule. Great decision by the Referee! That said, I think that the Referee should have shown a yellow card on a couple of fouls instead of having a "quiet talk" with the offender. Overall, I think that he maintained good command of the game and tried to allow play to continue as much as he could.

He had a high criterion, so he didn't whistle every foul.

A solid job. Just thought he bought too much of the Dutch appeals early on in the first 20 mins or so and this set the scene for later in the match. Not sure about his lino's, because I thought they didn't correct him when he got a couple of decisions wrong and they were better placed than him, (or perhaps it was them getting it wrong).Great comments by Andre' by the way.

Poll was on the radio (BBC 5 Live) saying that if he was in charge he would have given offside!! Then again, he prob would have given 3 yellow card to someone too...
